Tufts Health Plan partners with Meals on Wheels to deliver meals to Tufts Health RITogether members who qualify. Members may qualify if they:
- Are at risk for malnutrition
- Have trouble moving around
- Don’t have a way to get to the store
Care managers and community health workers help connect these members to the meal program. Currently, 90 Tufts Health RITogether members are receiving delivered meals through Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island.
Fighting food insecurity and more
“Food insecurity is a real problem across the state of Rhode Island,” says Alice Msumba, who leads the RI Medicaid program at Tufts Health Plan. Last year, the Rhode Island Community Food Bank said that nearly 40% of people in the state reported having trouble getting enough food. “The Meals on Wheels program really helps by delivering meals statewide to people who need them.”
Depending on the person’s needs, Meals on Wheels offers other programs besides meal delivery. One example is their pet food program which provides pet food and supplies to people who are homebound. Some people report skipping meals to feed their pets. This program is paid for by donations.
Meals on Wheels even provides backpacks with school supplies to children in need. Some Point32Health employees helped organize and pack backpacks at Meals on Wheels as part of the company’s annual volunteer week activities in June. Point32Health is the parent company of Tufts Health Plan.

In March, U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and Alice Msumba visited a Cranston couple who gets meals from Meals on Wheels. You can read more about their visit here.
