Being a teen (ages 12-21) is harder today than it’s ever been.

Growing up isn’t easy. Being a teen (ages 12-21) is harder today than it’s ever been. Even though many teens are young and healthy, it’s important for them to see their primary care provider (PCP) for a well care visit.

During these visits, your teen’s PCP may:

  • Screen for health issues
  • Provide shots your teen may need for school, camp, work or college
  • Check your teen’s growth and development
  • Let them know what changes they can expect as they get older
  • Talk about your teen’s feelings and how they can tell normal ups and downs from more serious problems
  • Provide counseling, referrals and treatment as needed
  • Talk with you and your teen about the value of a healthy lifestyle
  • Check in about risky behaviors, peer pressure, social media and bullying
  • Talk with your teen about what they should do if they’re sick, in trouble or just want to get in touch with them

To make the most of the well child visit:

  • Remember your teen is growing up and they need to begin to take the lead
  • Bring shot records if you have them
  • Be prepared to fill out some forms about your teen or your family
  • Bring any forms the PCP needs to fill out, such as forms for school and sports
  • Bring a list of questions you may have
  • Urge your teen to ask questions
  • Give the teen some time alone with the PCP if needed

Keep in mind that these visits help your teen develop a relationship with their PCP. Teens are curious about their bodies and their health. They check the internet and hear from their friends. A well care visit gives them a chance to talk with heir PCP about the many things – the effects of exercise, diet, smoking, how they can do better in school or with relationships, and much more.

It’s often hard for kids to open up when things are going wrong. Knowing their PCP is someone they can turn to if something happens can reassure both you and your teen. Your child’s PCP is someone your teen and your family can rely on for guidance. The PCP is there to help your teen become a healthy adult.
