You may get a letter or call from the state if your child is part of Katie Beckett and is turning 19. Katie Beckett is a Medicaid eligibility category for those under age 19. It is for those who have serious health issues. They live at home though they would qualify to live in an institution. These children do not have Medicaid due to family income.
The state is reaching out to families to let them know about other options when their child turns 19. The state will review them for other programs, such as:
- Medicaid based on income
- Long-term services and supports (LTSS). LTSS may be offered to those who qualify:
- As a disabled adult
- For developmental disabilities services
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Medicaid. Those ages 19-21 who get or qualify for SSI will shift to this program.
What you can do
Respond right away to letters and calls from the state. They may ask you for more info. This will help them review your child’s status. The state hopes to move children smoothly into other programs.
