Family-based intensive treatment (FIT)

Family-based intensive treatment (FIT) is a home- and community-based service for youth under age 21 who are enrolled in MassHealth Standard or CommonHealth and who have serious emotional disturbance (SED). A team that includes a clinician, paraprofessional and Family Partner (a trained individual who has experience raising a child with significant behavioral health challenges) provides FIT. Treatment involves intensive family therapy, care coordination and family engagement. The goal is to:

  • Stabilize the youth’s mental health
  • Strengthen family supports
  • Transition the youth to less-intensive services within 4–6 months

FIT offers flexible, need-based scheduling and 24/7 crisis response. It emphasizes natural supports, risk management and sustainable treatment gains through structured, strength-based interventions.

FIT services require prior authorization. To obtain authorization, the FIT provider can call 888-257-1985 (TTY: 711), Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm.
