Help when you’re having a baby

A doula can help new and experienced families

September 29, 2023

Being pregnant can be exciting—and stressful. Fortunately, you can get help from a doula* at no cost to you. Support from a doula can help you have a healthier pregnancy. They can also help you feel more relaxed getting ready for a new baby. Here are some common questions about working with a doula:

Q: What is a doula?

A: Doulas are trained professionals who give emotional, physical and educational support to families before birth, during labor and after delivery. Their goal is for people to have the skills and confidence they need to thrive as parents.

Q: How do doulas help those who are expecting?

A: Doulas can teach expectant parents and families about childbirth, breastfeeding/chestfeeding, newborn care and self-care. As part of the program, the doula can:

  • Visit you at home twice while you are pregnant
  • Be with you for emotional support during labor and delivery
  • Visit you twice after your baby is born

You can sign up for the program when you are 28 or more weeks pregnant. The doula can start working with you when you are 34 weeks.

Q: Do doulas make a difference?

Studies show that those who worked with a doula were less likely to have a birth complication or a baby born with a low birth weight. They also were more likely to breastfeed.
