What’s one of the most important things you can do for your health?

Make sure you have a PCP

September 29, 2023

A primary care provider (PCP) is the person you see for most of your routine care. A PCP can make a big difference in your health and well-being by:

  • Helping you stay healthy
  • Treating you when you are ill
  • Checking on any ongoing health issues you have
  • Referring you to a specialist when you need advanced care

You may be most familiar with seeing a PCP for a routine checkup. During a checkup, your PCP may:

  • Check your height, weight, blood pressure, ears, nose, throat and more
  • Order blood tests
  • Assess your risk for certain conditions
  • Tell you what screenings you may need based on your age and health history
  • Talk with you about making healthy lifestyle choices, like eating healthier foods and exercising.

If you don’t have a PCP, here are some things to consider:

  • You need to choose a PCP who is in our network. Search our provider directory to find a provider who meets your needs.
  • Providers who specialize in family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine and OB/GYN can be PCPs.

There is a shortage of PCPs in Rhode Island and across the country. This means that you may have to call several PCP offices to find one who meets your needs and who is taking new patients. It takes a little time, but it’s worth the effort!
