Federal Poverty Level

Federal poverty levels (FPLs) are determined by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and are used to determine financial eligibility for a variety of federal and state programs and benefits. Your FPL is based on a combination of your income and family (household) size.

When you determine your FPL:

  • Estimate your family's projected annual income before taxes for the 2015 tax year.
  • To determine your household size, use the number of dependents you list when filing your taxes.
  • Remember, this calculation is an estimate. You will learn exactly which FPL you fall under and what health insurance programs you are eligible for when you apply for health insurance and enroll in a plan at MAhealthconnector.org.

Trouble reading this table?
Here is an example: Let’s say you have a family of three (yourself, your spouse, and a child) and earn $27,000 yearly pre-tax. Go to the row labeled “3” under “Family size,” and find where your income falls. Since $27,000 is above $26,328 (the maximum for 133%) and below $29,688 (the maximum for 150%), your FPL would be 150%.
