Expanded Coverage for Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health Disorders

Includes family support and training, therapeutic mentoring

Beginning January 1, 2021, Tufts Health Plan started providing coverage for additional medically necessary intermediate and outpatient behavioral health services to children and adolescents, including two new services, Family Support and Training (FS&T) and Therapeutic Mentoring (TM).1

This move builds on Tufts Health Plan’s coverage expansion of behavioral health benefits for youth up to age 19 with serious emotional disturbances that went into effect in 2019 in accordance with Massachusetts state law. Family Support & Training and Therapeutic Mentoring services do not require prior authorization but services must be referred by a clinical hub provider.

For more information on behavioral health services, please refer to your Evidence of Coverage document (also called a Benefit Document or Certificate of Insurance). If you think your child may be eligible, you should contact the Tufts Health Plan Behavioral Health Department at 800.208.9565.

  1. For fully insured, Commercial members only, including Tufts Health Direct. 2021 medical benefit changes are available beginning on January 1, 2021 or on your health plan or group renewal date.
