Rhode Island Coverage of Perinatal Doula Services

Effective July 1, 2022

Tufts Health Plan is pleased to provide coverage for doula services for our Rhode Island members who are fully insured through their employer-sponsored coverage. Doula coverage is included in all plans issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2022.

A "doula" or "perinatal doula" is a trained non-medical professional who provides physical, emotional, and informational support to pregnant individuals and their partners before, during, and after pregnancy.

You do not need a primary care provider (PCP) referral or prior approval from Tufts Health Plan to receive doula services. Doula services are covered for each pregnancy (in-person or via telehealth).

  • Up to 2 visits before birth
  • Attendance during labor and delivery
  • Up to 2 visits after pregnancy within 12 months after delivery date
