Rhode Island Coverage of Perinatal Doula Services

Effective July 1, 2022

Tufts Health Plan is pleased to provide coverage for doula services for our Rhode Island members who are fully insured through their employer-sponsored coverage. Doula coverage is included in all plans issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2022.

A "doula" or "perinatal doula" is a trained non-medical professional who provides physical, emotional, and informational support to pregnant individuals and their partners before, during, and after pregnancy.

You do not need a primary care provider (PCP) referral or prior approval from Tufts Health Plan to receive doula services. Doula services are covered for each pregnancy (in-person or via telehealth).

  • Up to 2 visits before birth
  • Attendance during labor and delivery
  • Up to 2 visits after pregnancy within 12 months after delivery date

To find a certified doula, please call Member Services at (800) 682-8059. A representative will help you locate a doula who provides covered services under your plan.1

  1. Doulas are not medical professionals. They do not deliver babies, provide medical diagnosis, treatment, or advice. They do not administer medications. The following are not covered doula services or expenses: travel expenses and mileage, any childcare services or services for children other than the newborn within 12 months of the delivery date, housekeeping assistance, and doula services provided in connection with home births (since home births are not covered services under this plan). Additional visits may be approved when medically necessary.
