Merger FAQs

Information about the Tufts Health Plan/Harvard Pilgrim Health Care merger

October 10, 2019

Are your companies still giving separate quotes for new business?

Yes.  Until this pending transaction is approved and officially closes, which we anticipate to be sometime in Q2/Q3 of 2020, Tufts Health Plan and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care are separate and independent companies and as such, will provide their own quotes.

When will you start negotiating contracts as one company?

Our existing contracts remain in place until they expire.  If a contract expires before the transaction closes, Tufts Health Plan will renegotiate as we normally would.

Once the transaction closes, anticipated to be sometime in Q2/Q3 of 2020, the new organization will be the contracting entity.

Are you changing the names of your products?

Until the transaction closes, it’s business as usual.  Any changes to any of Tufts Health Plan’s products or services will be communicated directly to you as they are today.

Once the new entity is formed, any changes to products and services will be communicated directly to you in a timely manner.

Will you be eliminating any products?

Until the transaction closes, it’s business as usual.  Any changes to any of Tufts Health Plan’s products or services will be communicated directly to you as they are today.

Once the new entity is formed, any changes to products and services will be communicated directly to you in a timely manner.

Will you be adding any new and innovative products?

Until the transaction closes, it’s business as usual.  Any changes to any of Tufts Health Plan’s products or services will be communicated directly to you as they are today.

Once the new entity is formed, any changes to products and services will be communicated directly to you in a timely manner.

Is there anything different this year with open enrollment?

Nothing changes with open enrollment this year.

What happens to Tufts Health Freedom Plan or the relationship Harvard Pilgrim has with Benevera?

Until the transaction closes, it is business as usual.  Both Tufts Health Plan and Harvard Pilgrim believe in the value of partnering with providers to lower total medical costs on behalf of customers.

While our individual approaches in the New Hampshire market may have differed in form, they are both predicated on the same underlying objective: provider partnership to better operate as health insurers. The new organization will continue to explore how best to satisfy this objective going forward.
