Our highly respected and esteemed board members focus on our strategy and goals, and the implementation of our mission to improve the health and wellness of the diverse communities we serve.

Eileen Auen

Eileen Auen was elected to the Tufts Health Plan board in 2016. As a director, Ms. Auen works with her fellow board members and senior management to guide the company’s overall operational performance, strategy and direction. Ms. Auen serves on the Compensation, Governance and Technology Committees.

Ms. Auen has more than 25 years of experience in health care and financial services. Prior to founding Deep Run Consulting LLC, a firm that provides consulting services to the health care industry, Ms. Auen served as executive chairman of Helios, CEO of PMSI and CEO of APS Healthcare, all health care services organizations. Earlier in her career, she was Head of Healthcare Management for Aetna and President of Health Net of the Northeast.

She currently serves on the boards of several organizations, including Medstar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, MD.

Thomas A. Croswell, CLU

Tom Croswell became president and CEO of Tufts Health Plan in January of 2016.  As CEO of one of the region’s largest health plans that provides health insurance coverage across the life span regardless of age or circumstance, Tom defines the company’s strategic plan, ensuring Tufts Health Plan maintains its strong culture of quality, innovation and customer service. Tom joined Tufts Health Plan in 2007 as chief operating officer and was named president in 2013.

Tom previously served as senior vice president of medical management and specialty businesses at CIGNA HealthCare. While at CIGNA, he also served as president of its dental, pharmacy and workers' compensation businesses, and led development of its consumer-directed health care products. Prior to his career at CIGNA, Tom served in senior leadership roles at Prudential Insurance Company, including president of its western region and senior vice president of its individual insurance organization.

He is the current chair of the Massachusetts Association of Health Plans, which represents 17 health plans covering more than 2.6 million Massachusetts residents.  MAHP is dedicated to improving the health of the Commonwealth by promoting affordable, safe and coordinated health care. He is a member of the board of directors of the Network for Excellence in Health Innovation, the New England Council, Massachusetts Business Roundtable, RI Quality Institute and America’s Health Insurance Plans. He currently serves as a board member emeritus for the Alzheimer’s Association MA/NH chapter, for which he also served as board chair.  He is also a member of CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion, a commitment to advance diversity and inclusion in the workplace. He is a past member of the board of directors of the National Committee on Quality Assurance and the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce.

Tom completed the Wharton Advanced Management Program at the University of Pennsylvania and earned a B.A. from Syracuse University. He is a chartered life underwriter.

Charlotte Golar Richie

Charlotte Golar Richie was elected to the Tufts Health Plan board in 2018. As a director, Ms. Richie works with her fellow board members and senior management to guide the company’s overall operational performance, strategy and direction. Ms. Richie serves on the Care Management and Finance Committees.

Ms. Richie is an experienced leader and administrator with a background in public service and political activism, dedicated to civil rights, fairness and equality. She is a former member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives and a former commissioner at the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination, and she has also served as the City of Boston’s housing chief and director of the Department of Neighborhood Development.

She currently is a Fellow in the Distinguished Public Service Leaders Program at the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy at UMass Boston, and she serves on the Tufts Health Plan Foundation board of directors.

Michael McColgan

Michael McColgan was elected to the Tufts Health Plan board in 2017. As a director, Mr. McColgan works with his fellow board members and senior management to guide the company’s overall operational performance, strategy and direction. Mr. McColgan serves on the Governance and Finance Committees and is the chair of the Audit Committee.

Mr. McColgan was a Partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) providing assurance, risk management and business advisory services primarily to the Financial Services Industry until his retirement in July 2017. During his 38 year career with PwC, Mr. McColgan held various leadership positions including East Region Assurance Leader and Managing Partner of the New York Metro Insurance Practice and the Northeast Financial Services and Insurance Practices. He is a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the American and Pennsylvania Institutes of Certified Public Accountants.

He also currently serves as a Director on the board of Employers Holdings, Inc.

Thomas P. O’Neill III

Thomas O’Neill was elected to the Tufts Health Plan board in 2006. As a director, Mr. O’Neill works with his fellow board members and senior management to guide the company’s overall operational performance, strategy and direction. Mr. O’Neill is chair of the Governance Committee.

Mr. O’Neill is the founder and chief executive officer of O’Neill and Associates. Mr. O’Neill is a former state legislator and lieutenant governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

He currently serves as chairman of the board of Tufts Health Plan Foundation. In addition, he serves on the boards of several diverse organizations including Cristo Rey Boston High School, Regis College and Boston College.

 

Bertram Scott

Bertram Scott was elected to the Tufts Health Plan board in 2015. As a director, Mr. Scott works with his fellow board members and senior management to guide the company’s overall operational performance, strategy and direction.

Mr. Scott has more than 25 years of experience in corporate governance and business expertise in the health care and insurance fields. He currently is senior vice president of Population Health at Novant Health Inc., an integrated system of physician practices, hospitals and outpatient centers in North Carolina.

He serves on the boards of several organizations including the AXA Financial, Inc. and Lowe’s Companies, Inc.

 

Irina Simmons

Irina Simmons was elected to the Tufts Health Plan board in 2014. As a director, Ms. Simmons works with her fellow board members and senior management to guide the company’s overall operational performance, strategy and direction. Ms. Simmons serves on the Audit and Care Management Committees and is the chair of the Technology Committee.

Ms. Simmons has more than 30 years of experience in finance, information technology, enterprise risk management and compliance. Until recently, Ms. Simmons served as senior vice president and chief risk officer at the EMC Corporation.

She previously served on the board of trustees of UMass Memorial Hospital.

 

Robert Spellman

Robert Spellman was elected to the Tufts Health Plan board in 1996. As a director, Mr. Spellman works with his fellow board members and senior management to guide the company’s overall operational performance, strategy and direction. Mr. Spellman has served as the chair of the board since 2014.

Mr. Spellman has more than 35 years of financial and operating experience. He has served as the chief financial officer and director of The Yankee Candle Company, chief financial officer and director of Star Markets and chief financial officer of Staples.

He currently works with several private equity firms and also serves on the boards of several organizations including Project Hope.

 

Frank Torti, M.D.

Frank Torti, M.D., was elected to the Tufts Health Plan board in 2016. As a director, Dr. Torti works with his fellow board members and senior management to guide the company’s overall strategy and direction. Dr. Torti serves on the Care Management, Finance and Technology Committees.

After years as a tenured faculty member at Stanford University, Dr. Torti left Stanford to become both Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center and founding Chair of the Department of Cancer Biology at Wake Forest. He later assumed the additional role of Vice President of Strategic Initiatives for the health center. Dr. Torti was then recruited to the U.S. Food and Drug administration where he first served as principal deputy commission and Chief Scientist. He was then appointed Acting Commissioner of the FDA, a 14,000 member organization with employees stationed across the globe. After serving at the FDA, he assumed the role as Executive Vice President of the University of Connecticut Health Center and Dean of the School of Medicine.

Dr. Torti is currently Board of Trustees Professor and Professor of Medicine at the University of Connecticut Health Center. He has served on the NCI’s Board of Scientific Advisors (BSA) as well as the NCI’s Clinical Trial Advisory Committee (CTAC). Dr. Torti’s experience in healthcare spans executive leadership of institutions with billions of dollars in revenue, a distinguished career as a physician/scientist with deep expertise in oncology and cancer biology, and leadership of one of the most important food and drug regulatory bodies in the world.

Greg Tranter

Greg Tranter was elected to the Tufts Health Plan board in 2007. As a director, Mr. Tranter works with his fellow board members and senior management to guide the company’s overall operational performance, strategy and direction. Mr. Tranter serves on the Compensation and Technology Committees and is chair of the Finance Committee.

Mr. Tranter has more than 30 years of management and senior leadership experience in the property and casualty insurance industry. He recently retired as executive vice president, chief information officer and chief operations officer at Hanover Insurance Group, where he had global responsibility for technology and operations across the company.

He currently serves on the board of Integra Partners Holdings and is President of the Buffalo History Museum.

Todd Whitbeck

Todd Whitbeck was elected to the Tufts Health Plan board in 2018. As a director, Mr. Whitbeck works with his fellow board members and senior management to guide the company’s overall operational performance, strategy and direction. Mr. Whitbeck serves on the Audit, Finance and Technology Committees.

Mr. Whitbeck is chief financial officer of CANarchy, a craft brewery collective. Previously he served as the executive vice president and chief financial officer of Water Pik Inc., a leader in personal and oral health care products. He has 30 years of experience in finance as a senior executive, guiding financial planning and analysis, accounting, mergers and acquisitions, risk management and tax law implementation.

 

Susan Windham-Bannister, Ph.D.

Susan Windham-Bannister, Ph.D., was elected to the Tufts Health Plan board in 2006. As a director, Dr. Windham-Bannister works with her fellow board members and senior management to guide the company’s overall operational performance, strategy and direction. Dr. Windham-Bannister serves on the Audit and Governance Committees and is chair of the Compensation Committee.

Dr. Windham-Bannister has more than 35 years of experience in public policy, strategic business planning and marketing services in health care and life sciences. She currently serves as President and CEO of Biomedical Growth Strategies LLC which provides advisory services to the biopharma industry and was formerly the founding CEO of the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, which administers a $1B fund to accelerate life sciences innovation in Massachusetts.

Dr. Windham-Bannister currently serves on the board of Cambridge Bancorp and is the Chair of the National Governing Board of the Association for Women in STEM (AWIS).
